Adhesion Testing

Adhesion testing is a key part of determining the usefulness of Plasma and Corona Treatment. Testing performance before treatment and then with different parameters can give vital information on what’s going on.

We supply several adhesion testers as well as operate them in our lab. These systems can be used for demos and trials or for full quality testing during subcontract manufacturing done by Ebble Manufacturing.

Available for immediate use are dolly testing which tests a metal sample pulling away from a sample directly away from the material. Lap shear for an overlapped joint, great for testing ultimate adhesion. Also peel tests which are especially good for leather and fabric adhesion.

Each will give a different bond failure method and even if it’s not the expected failure during your product life, the testing can still give important information and insights in to what is going on with the part.

How Adhesion Testing Works

Using calibrated load cells, the adhesion test systems pull at a known speed and force to pull the samples apart.

Measuring this force we can obtain ultimate strength, average strength and other important information so we can compare the results between samples.

It’s also interesting to look at the parts and compare with surface energy and treatment parameters to get the full picture of what the testing means. When we consider surface energy, it’s often thought that more is better, but that isn’t always true.

As surface energy is only an indicator of adhesion, it’s great to put all the testing together and get the whole story.

Dolly Testing

We offer the DeFelsko Positest Adhesion Tester which is a useful tool for measuring the force to pull a metal dolly directly off a material surface. Available to buy for your own use through our website.

We also use this equipment for quality testing and project testing on components in our labs to determine treated and untreated component performance.

A really useful unit, it’s easy moved around as it’s battery powered and hand held. you can perform a test in a minute or two and take data away using wireless connectivity or USB as required.

Lap Shear & Peel Testing

We partner with Tinius Olsen for tensile test equipment, and it’s available as a lab service, as a quality check for contract manufacturing and for project support for establishing performance of treated and untreated components.

Lap shear and peel testing are two key failure methods for adhesive bonding that allow us to determine how the finished part will perform in the real world.

It can often be the case that multiple tests need to be worked on to determine the most useful failure method. It can be that while something is very strong in the lap shear tests, it’s not so strong in the peel tests. You also need to consider this against the failure method the part will see in reality. A label for example will likely need much stronger peel adhesion if it’s going to stay on a surface for good compared to an adhesive joint that is being compressed or stretched.
