Electrical Leak Detection

Finding holes or defects in a plastic moulding can be difficult, time consuming and have severe consequences if problems aren’t detected.

Electrical Leak Detection using the Tantec LeakTEC system is an automated, inline 100% inspection system capable of finding micron sized holes in less than a second over an array of parts.

Unlike gas leak detection, pressure decay or other leak detection systems, electrical leak detection is looking for an electrical signal with very sensitive equipment. Because it’s looking for a specific signal and not measuring something over time, the entire test is quick. Often measurable in milliseconds.

Using LeakTEC to detect pin holes in mouldings is commonly restricted to polymers, or least to non-conductive materials.

It is a standard procedure to surface test moulding defects, it can also be used for bonded and sealed sections. This is ideal for a range of applications such as medical devices, caps and closures; indeed, any item where the contained product will spoil when exposed to atmosphere.

The Process

Electrical leak detection takes place when a pulse of electricity is directed at the part that requires testing. At several thousand volts, the power wants to find ground between a discharge electrode and an electrical ground, with the plastic itself acting as an insulator between the two.

In the event a crack or pinhole being present, an electrical spike is established between the electrode and ground. If the part is good however, there is a high resistance and no spike, the part is able to proceed.

While this sounds simple it requires precision tools and calibrated sensitive power generation to repeatably test. Leak Detection can discover holes not visible to the naked eye and can give 100% inspection of parts in very quick test runs.

These systems can run as standalone units with individual test tools, or they can be fully integrated in to production automation and test parts moving along a line or presented in quick succession.

A really sensible place to use this technology is for robot demoulded components that are already held and can be presented before the next components are finished. This give immediate and complete feedback and means that failed parts and problem machines are identified straight away without additional processing or time passing.

Electrical Leak Detection

The innovative Tantec electrical leak detection system – LeakTEC – uses the same high performance, high voltage generator and transformer technology used in our plasma and corona family of products.

Especially popular with medical device and packaging manufacturers, LeakTEC is unrivalled for an automated 100% inspection system.

The LeakTEC series of systems has a core technology set up, however each machine has it’s own specific test tooling and integration whether that’s a simple table top device for individual or small array testing, or a fully integrated, robotic solution such as a demoulding and test set up.
